With a rich history and deep-rooted tradition in winemaking dating back to the 1950s, the Titakis family remains dedicated to the art and craft of producing exceptional wines. Now in its third generation, the family continues to honor its legacy through a commitment to quality, innovation, and the unique characteristics of Cretan terroir. The winery blends indigenous Cretan grape varieties with carefully selected international ones, creating wines that embody the essence of Crete while contributing to the ongoing renaissance of Cretan wines.
The Titakis Family’s Winemaking Journey
The Titakis family’s involvement in winemaking began in the early 1950s, when Titos Titakis, the grandfather, established the first winery in the village of Kalloni, located in Heraklion, Crete — his birthplace.
There, he began producing small batches of bulk wine. Titos was a forward-thinking entrepreneur, eager to expand beyond his local area. His travels took him as far as Elounda and Spinalonga, helping to lay the foundation for the family’s future success.
In 1975, Titos’ son, Nikolaos Titakis, took the reins of the winery, continuing the tradition set by his father while forging new paths in the Greek winemaking industry. Nikolaos expanded the winery’s reach, establishing collaborations with winemaking companies across Greece.
In 1996, Nikolaos acquired a new winemaking facility in the nearby village of Kounavi, marking a significant milestone for the family. This modern facility is where wine production moved to and where the winery and the Fabrika Experience are now housed.
Today, the third generation, led by Titos Titakis, grandson of the founder, continues to build on the family's legacy. Titos, alongside his sister Maria Titaki, an experienced oenologist, spearheaded the systematic bottling of limited-edition, high-quality wines in 2006. Their goal was clear: to produce wines that truly represent the character of Crete. Grapes are sourced from the family’s private vineyards in the Messara Basin, which include both indigenous varieties such as Vidiano, Moscato Spinas, Vilana, Malvazia Aromatica, Kotsifali, and Assyrtiko, as well as international varieties like Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay.
With a commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation, the Titakis family continues to lead one of the largest private wineries on the island, dedicated to producing wines that reflect the timeless beauty of Crete.
